Trip Blog — The New Breed. You know your in rural Saskatchewan when.... I My watch is a constant reminder of the real world and somehow seems to keep me grounded to that world.

Yesterday the heat and sun were sweltering mid day. My paddle strokes had slowed and my energy had drained away. Come 6pm I started looking for a campsite as usual. Nothing decent with a landing showed itself.

The last couple hours it had cooled down and the travel was actually quite pleasant again. Had I taken a break in the shade midday when the sun is trying to roast me I could paddle for a extra hour or two in the evening.

It has been a month on the trail and the sun is noticeably up later in the evening.  Today I am going to experiment with this. I'm not sure I am doing myself any favours by getting up before light. It is still a bit cold in the morning and I find myself spending half my time shivering. The last two mornings there has been frost. Certainly not ready to give up my Arcteryx belay parka.

It has been such a blessing in the evenings and mornings. I added some more fibreglass to the bottom of my boat.

It had taken some hard knocks between Calgary and Lumsden. The Kevlar on the nose had worn through in a couple spots.

The sides of the boats had a couple gouges. None of this was to serious but this was a good place to dry dock and do a few touch ups. My cousin Khea who I had not met before was warm and welcoming.

They had a loft above the garage that she offered me. First night there there was a major wind/lightning/rain storm. I didn't notice I was so exhausted from the weeks prior I missed it all. Mountain co- op MEC supplied me with TVG2 tent which is a four season two person tent. It is well constructed well thought out and laughed at the 1.

Deifenbaker threw at it. No I was quite fine in my shelter which had been my home for the last 3. While I was there my cousin Leanne hat contacted a local television network which wanted to do a interview with me. So I had to take one more day off then I planned but that still worked for me. I had originally planned on paddling out to Regina Beach on Last Mountain Lake but that was a day and a half out of my way both ways.

Plus it was lake paddling so it could work for or against me depending on the winds. Nope hanging with the cuz was working just fine. Unfortunately all good things must come to a end. Monday morning rolled around.

I was up late but mostly packed so when 4: 3. I packed my boat and pulled it down the empty Main Street. I passed the Lumsden pizza shop.

I actually had to stop and look at it again. This tiny restaurant in the middle of Saskatchewan makes the best pizza that I may have ever eaten. I've eaten some sort of pizza thing in at least a dozen countries but my god this place was good. The art of layering, the crust cooked till it was just slightly crisp on the bottom, fresh ingredients and somewhere in all that they sprinkled love on top of it all. I went back a couple times for consistency testing of course and OMG it was better each time.

I was in the water around 5: 3. The paddling had improved or at least got to the point where I didn't have to get out of the boat every 1.

Wascana creek joined the river just before town. While it only added 1/1.

Qu! Appelle it seemed to be enough to to make life tolerable. Only one beaver dam between Lumsden and Craven. There was another dam at Craven which controlled the flow into the Qu'Appelle. It wasn't a lot though I wish, dreamed and prayed it was enough.

It was, still sandbars but for the most part I could paddle. My CTV crew texted me said they would have to reschedule. Apparently there was a poodle somewhere getting a haircut that needed to be covered.

I kinda wrote them off. I had taken a extra day and it was time to get moving. They had a truck they could figure it out. I have nothing to say about the river that hasn't been said. To say it winds is a understatement.

I knew it was going to be like this although six feet more water would make a difference. The real slap in the face is when the river turns west and just to add to that slap in the face like you need one the wind will be blowing in your face. Double injustice! The TV crew rescheduled so I told them I would meet them at xyz bridge at 1.

Then I get a text saying they had more breaking news. Another poodle needed a haircut I guess. My phone pinged a couple times but I didn't bother answering it. A couple hours later I decided to check google earth and saw that my TV crew were on their way out. Must have been a trim on the poodle.

I snapped them my location and they managed to find a spot where the river came close to the highway that ran along the valley. A pretty young lady mid to late twenties showed up with another guy.

Slightly older maybe but obvious that he had some blood in him. They did a pretty professional job of the whole thing finishing the interview first then shooting a bit of b- roll. Only took up about 4. The young blood let me know that I would be passing through his home crib of Crooked lake. The place he grew up. I appreciated the info. We shook hands and it was time for me to go.

I thought about that kid for awhile. They type of kid that is going to take the native population to the next level when that time comes. If not him his kids will pick up the torch. The girl was professional but a muddy river bank was about as far as she could go wilderness wise.

One more night of muddy river camping which is so much like every other night of river camping. Mud covered everything and was everywhere. It's dirty work paddling the Qu'Appelle this time of year. My cockpit was a mess. My dry bags were covered in the grey river mud. Orange peels and garbage where on floating around on the floor.

It was beginning to look like my car. God I miss my family. Aven gave me a great tour of the home quarter on face time yesterday. It was great to be in contact. She hadn't forgotten who I was and we discussed all kinds of stuff. Couldn't get her to kick one of the cats for me though.

I parked just short of Fort Qu'Appelle for that night. Finding a camp is a bit troublesome in cottage country. I managed to find a spot that must have been a vacant lot. It was a nice but I had a cottage less then a 1. In the morning I headed into Qu'Appelle.

Actually 2. 0 minutes and I reached the dam that created the lakes that I had just traveled. I unloaded and pulled my boat into town. Watch Rad Online Fandango. I need to resupply here because I don't think I have a opportunity for awhile. I'm tricked out pretty good.
